Curtis, Michigan History Pure Curtis Cabin History Once known as Pete's Cove, this beautiful lakeside Curtis, MI property was built around 1945. It was started by a man named Leo Gonyon. Leo was born in Ontario in 1896. He was a logger, a veteran of WWI, and a stone mason. Leo moved to his father's home town of Gould City in 1932. As a stone mason he moved to Curtis, MI in 1945 and purchased 30 acres of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Leo also purchased this beautiful property and built his log cabin on South Manistique Lake. This property was originally known as Humphrey's Harbor. Leo was well known for the many stone walls that he had built for people around the area along with many on Mackinac Island. |
Leo's legacy continued on at Pete's Cove with his son Pete and wife Cathy. They kept the resort on the lake open for many seasons for the tourists who would traveled to the U.P. In 2011, the resort was purchased by Colin and Sandi Orlowski. They begin visiting the Curtis, MI area in the 1970's. Their family fell in love with the Curtis area and its lake, forests, fishing and arts community. They renamed the resort "Pure Curtis Cabins" to reflect the tranquility of the area. They have remodelled and added updates to each the cabins and will continue to provide that ever peaceful stay here along the South Manistique Lake. |
